
DUNLAP – Both Warsaw and NorthWood doubled their pleasure during a sweltering day two of the Northern Lakes Conference Boys Tennis Tournament Thursday night.
Meanwhile, host Concord singled out the league competition to set themselves up for a conference crown come Saturday.
The Tigers advanced their No. 1 doubles team of Bailey Buhrt and Spencer Britton into the title match. Senior Buhrt and junior Britton rallied to beat the Concord team of junior Travis Herman and sophomore Cal Whiitaker 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a semifinal match.
Buhrt and Britton, the top seed in the No. 1 doubles bracket, will face the NorthWood team of seniors Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman in the finale. Mast and Hoffman, the No. 2 seed, also dropped their first set Thursday night before coming back to sideline the Plymouth team of junior Clay Hilliard and sophomore Adam Hunter 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Panthers will also play for a league tourney title at the No. 2 doubles spot. The team of senior Trevor Klotz and junior Trajan Schwartz beat the Warsaw team of juniors Nolan Knight and Reuben Williams 6-2, 6-4 in their semifinal matchup.
The team of Klotz and Schwartz, also a No. 2 seed, will play the top-seeded Concord duo of senior Jacob Shetterly and junior Drew McDougle in the finals. The Minutemen pair rallied to beat the Goshen duo of Tony Le and Drake Crowder 0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.
Concord, which won the NLC regular-season title at 7-0, will play for championships at all three singles positions on Saturday.
Senior Will Boyer shook off a slow start to advance at No. 1 singles play for the Minutemen. Boyer dropped the first three games before rebounding to top Warsaw senior Colton Lind 6-4, 6-2. He will cace Northridge senior Simon Grevengoed in the final. Grevnegoed beat NorthWood sophomore Wes Troyer 6-1, 6-1 Thursday night.
Junior Nate Slabach of the Minutemen will play for the title at No. 2 singles. He earned his spot with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Plymouth junior Mitch Rose. Goshen senior Simon Myers beat Northridge sophomore Gabe Rodino 6-2, 6-1 to also advance to the finals.

Junior Freddy Buckingham will play for the No. 3 singles crown for the Minutemen. He defeated Northridge freshman Cooper Tavernier 6-3, 6-1. Goshen junior Ryan Harmelink will also play in the final after he rallied to best NorthWood sophomore Jack Wysong 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
The trio of Boyer, Slabach and Buckingham were all the top seeds at their respective positions entering the conference tourney, which began Wednesday night at Concord.
Warsaw’s Kyler Bartol and Caleb Williams each won their matches in the consolation brackets Thursday night. Senior Bartol beat Elkhart Memorial senior Bradley Mendez 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles play. Sophomore Williams topped Memorial senior Rickey Hoover 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Both Bartol and Williams will play for fifth place on Saturday.
NorthWood’s Ben Vincent also won his consolation bracket match. Vincent beat Wawasee sophomore Zach Leedy 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles play.
Wawasee senior Dylan Staley lost his consolation match at No. 1 singles, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Plymouth senior Tommy Holloway. Junior Graham Perek of the Warriors dropped a 6-3, 6-0 consolation match to Plymouth’s Andy Rostron at No. 3 singles action.
The Warriors also lost both of its doubles consolation bracket matches. The team of senior Jake Cowan and junior Jake Krugman lost to Memorial. The Charger team of juniors Chris Troyer and Mike Troyer prevailed 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1. The Northridge duo of senior Connor Glenn and sophomore Avery Mantyla beat the Warrior team of seniors Evan Richey and Brady Robinson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles play.
NorthWood went 6-1 during NLC round-robin play with a loss to Concord. Warsaw was 4-3 in conference play and Wawasee 1-6.
The tourney concludes Saturday at Plymouth with play starting at 9 a.m.
