WARSAW — Kids asked and the Warsaw Community Public Library responded: it is expanding its programs for elementary school-age children.

The monthly LEGO programs have returned for the school year, and so has Maker Club—the pop-up makerspace for tinkering, building, and creating. New for the fall: monthly Tuesday after-school activities that support the learning and creativity of K-6 students in your life. Just drop in between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Kids Minecraft Club meets Oct. 10, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5. Kids can take turns playing Minecraft on a library device or bring their own. Kids can also take a break from playing the game and get creative through related activities, like stop-motion animation, coding, and pixel art. Kids Minecraft Club is fun for beginners and experts alike. Minecraft enthusiasts have the opportunity to bond over their fandom, while curious newcomers have a chance to learn the game and experience Minecraft culture.

Kids Game Club, set for Oct. 17 and Nov. 14, is a great way for Kindergarten through sixth grade students to enjoy chess and other tabletop games among peers. Kids can play an old favorite or learn a new classic. The library offers lots of chess, plus a wide variety of board games and card games. Or kids are welcome to bring their own to share with a friend.

Still more library activities for elementary school-age children are in development. Do you have any budding young authors in the family? Debuting Oct. 24 is Kids Writing Club, a place for children to express themselves through creative writing, storytelling and word games. Do you know any future computer programmers? Kids Coding Club is on the horizon. Mark your calendar for a special kick-off event Dec. 12.

While monthly Kids Club programs focus on different themes, what they share in common is a space for elementary schoolchildren to play and create in a fun, collaborative social atmosphere. The library encourages kids to bring their own project or agenda and to ask for access to something the library doesn’t have out. Since children under age 10 must have a caregiver at the library, the library also does its best to accommodate its younger or older family members.
