WARSAW — Families from throughout the county came to Central Park, Warsaw, to enjoy a fun day of learning about safety during the annual Family Safety Day today, 11-3 p.m. Sept. 9.

While learning about safety doesn’t always sound like fun, local sponsors Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Lutheran Health Network KCH and Kosciusko REMC brought fun activities for all ages. With clear, sunny skies, the weather was perfect for the outdoor event.

Activities included a bicycle rodeo, zip line, boat and bucket truck rides, gummy worm surgery, photo booth, inflatable obstacle course, and Pink Heals National Tour. Center Lake Pavilion hosted numerous booths for local organizations, including the KC Recycling Depot, Warsaw Storm and Wastewater, Walmart Vision and others. Kids also got the chance to meet local heroes: firefighters, police officers and paramedics.

As part of a demonstration, Warsaw-Wayne Fire set a plywood dollhouse on fire at 11:30 a.m. to simulate a fire in your home. The focus was to  show that having doors and windows open can fuel a fire. With opened windows, wind gusts provide needed oxygen to keep a fire going, and open doors help it to spread. Demonstration narrator firefighter Aaron Bolinger announced that it is much safer to sleep with doors and windows closed.

KREMC’s demonstration focused on teaching how electricity moves through power lines and what happens when your power goes out. Lineman Mike Whitaker narrated the demonstration with Isaac Harp acting as the lineman on duty. The duo walked through what happens when a tree falls on a power line, explained how trees can conduct electricity and showed numerous common objects that get stuck in power lines. Their stuffed squirrel pal Rocky joined the demonstration, showing how small animals can sometimes be the culprit behind lost power.

Parkview Samaritan Helicopter was on-site in the event’s early hours with Lutheran Air landing in Central Park shortly after 1 p.m. The helicopters were among many emergency vehicles on-site for kids and parents to look at, including an Indiana State Police Armored vehicle, the Kosciusko Dive Team truck and several fire engines and ambulances.

“We love coming to these safety day events,” said Jenny Smith, Warsaw, who was at the event with her two kids. “The kids just love it. I don’t think they know they’re learning safety things, I think they think they’re just seeing cool stuff,” she laughed.
