WARSAW — One thing you can say about Warsaw girls soccer — they don’t do anything halfway.

The Lady Tigers pushed their Northern Lakes Conference shutout streak to four games so far this season with a 6-0 rout of visiting Elkhart Memorial Tuesday, and, while they were at it, they used their stage as a chance to raise supplies and money for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

“I’m excited at the kids’ hearts and their passion to make this thing as big as it can be,” said Warsaw girls soccer coach Jon Hoover of the Tigers for Texas drive. “This team, everything they do they don’t go small; they go big. I think you can see by how much they’re driving this and how much they’re taking ownership of this. It’s just awesome to see them take it as their own.”

The team began accepting donations for their drive during Tuesday’s games in an effort to help those in need after Hurricane Harvey devastated large swaths of Texas last week, damaging or destroying over 185,000 homes, displacing more than 42,000 people and causing over $200 billion in damage and lost revenue to the state, according to estimates by the Associated Press.

The initiative is being spearheaded by junior mid Anna Grill and senior back Alex Koontz, who approached the team after Grill’s father came to her with the idea at the end of last week.

“My dad works at World Compassion Network, and he brought up the idea of a food drive, so we decided to bring it to our soccer team,” explained Grill.

“We posted something on Twitter, and we’ve had a lot of response from that. And the school has done a good job of showing it to everyone and getting the word out there,” Koontz said.

The Tigers began accepting donations at Tuesday’s game, but they’ll be continuing their drive during Thursday’s home game with Concord and Saturday’s contest versus Noblesville. With relief desperately needed and three home games on this week’s schedule, the timing was right to help, says Grill.

“It just happened to be the perfect week. We had three home games, and it was quick enough that it would still help,” she said.

Those who want to give can also reach out to World Compassion Network at (574) 267-5427 or via email at [email protected], or they can contact any Warsaw girls soccer player to donate. The Tigers are collecting non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products.

“A big part of our mission statement at the school and our team is enriching the lives of others, so this is a good way to do it,” said Koontz.

“We come out here, and we play a silly game. We kick a ball around, but there’s so much more important things going on in the world than how we play soccer. If we can use this game and in some way impact the world, that’s what we’re all about here at Warsaw,” echoed Hoover.

While the Tigers were in a giving mood off the pitch, they were stingy on it Tuesday.

The Indiana Soccer Coaches Association 3-A 17th-ranked squad used a dominant possession game to hold Memorial to just two shots on goal — both in the second half with the home team already leading six goals to none — while the Tigers registered 14 shots on frame themselves.

Forward Abby Steffensmeier recorded a hat trick with three goals, while fellow sophomore Delaney Taylor finished with a goal and three assists in the win, which pushed Warsaw to 4-0 in the NLC and 6-2-1 overall.

Steffensmeier put her team on the board in just the fourth minute on a Brenna Burht assist, added another score in the 28th minute and completed her hat trick in the 49th minute just seven seconds after another goal was called back. Steffensmeier’s final strike ballooned Warsaw’s advantage out to 5-0 and pretty much put the game completely out of reach.

“Abby has looked better and better. She had a few nicks with her knee and stuff, but she looked great tonight,” said Hoover. “Even off the ball, her runs looked like they were at pace. She did a great job laying off and getting it back. It wasn’t always that she was just beating people off the dribble — she was just unselfish to pass it and then, due to that unselfishness, she found it back and got a reward from it.”

Grill and Gracie Scholl also scored a goal apiece in the win, and Anna Sullivan finished with a pair of assists in a varied attack by the Tigers, whose accomplishment was all the more impressive given the conditions on the field as a stinging rain began to fall early, and temperatures dropped into the 50s in Warsaw.

Delaney Taylor dribbles upfield Tuesday. Taylor notched three assists in the win.

“I felt like at times we moved the ball really well tonight. We haven’t arrived, but they’re trying the right things,” Hoover said. “The wet weather kind of threw things off every once in awhile, but I’m proud of them. Whoever we put on the field, they didn’t change the style of play. We tried to possess the ball, we tried to move it from one sideline to the other, and I felt like everyone on our roster, the objective stayed the same, and they did a great job.”

Tuesday’s win represented Warsaw’s fifth straight shutout, and the Tigers kept an impressive four-game scoreless streak in the NLC alive with the clean sheet. The team’s credo is “We score. They don’t,” and players have made it one of their goals to shut out each of their conference opponents this season. So far, so good.

“They’re not doing it from an arrogant stance. If you reach for perfection, if you don’t get perfection you’re going to land in excellence somewhere there,” said Hoover. “They’re not settling. They’re playing really hard. They’re playing well together, and I’m just super proud of the way they come out every day and try to defend the net.”

Warsaw’s JV also earned an impressive shutout Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Memorial. Sarah Ocock scored three goals, and Tobi Avey netted another in the win.

The Tigers play host to Concord Thursday in a match slated for 6:45 p.m. It’s another opportunity to raise supplies for their drive and another chance at an NLC shutout.

“Concord is a really good team so we’re definitely going to be tested with that philosophy of not giving up a goal,” said Hoover. “We go into that in good shape. We’re excited to play a tough conference game, and the girls are ready.”
