NorthWood Sports Wrap: Sept. 5

NorthWood SportsCross Country

The NorthWood girls cross country team went 1-1 in a conference triangular in Nappanee.

The hosts beat Wawasee 20-41 and lost to Northridge 19-40 in league action at Stauffer Park. Northridge also beat Wawasee 16-47 in the meet.

The Raiders had four of the top five runners on the night, led by individual winner Caitlin Clark in a time of 19:27.

Erica Stutsman of NorthWood finished second overall in a time of 19:33.

Whitney Wolfe of the Panthers was eighth in 20:56 and Kate Jarvis was ninth in 21:12.

Kenzie Smith led Wawasee as she placed sixth overall in a time of 20:52.

The NorthWood boys team lost to both Northridge (17-42) and Wawasee (18-44). Northridge nipped Wawasee 28-29.

The Raiders had four of the top six finishers on the boys side, led by winner Noah Detweiler in a top time of 16:38.

Luke Griner of Wawasee was second in 16:41 with Spencer Hare of the Warriors third in 16:58.

Tyler Evers was the top finisher for the Panthers in seventh place in 17:31.

NorthWood will face Warsaw and Concord on Sept. 12 in another NLC meet.

Girls Soccer

The NorthWood girls soccer team picked up a big league win at Concord.

The Panthers notched the 2-0 Northern Lakes Conference victory as keeper Kira Robinson posted the shutout.

NorthWood tallied both of its goals in the final half for the win. Kali Parisi scored first for the Panthers and Avery Bontrager added an insurance goal late, off an assist from Savannah Feenstra.

Concord outshot the Panthers 9-7. Robinson came up big with nine saves.

The junior varsity game ended in a 0-0 tie.

NorthWood improves to 6-1-1 overall in varsity action and goes to 1-1-1 in the NLC. Concord drops to 3-1-2 overall and sits at 2-1 in league play.

NorthWood plays at John Glenn on Saturday.

Boys Tennis

The NorthWood boys tennis team topped Plymouth 4-1 in conference play.

Wes Troyer won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to pace the Panthers to the league win.

Landon Holland notched a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for NorthWood.

The Panthers won on both doubles courts as Jared Hoffman and Brant Mast won 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 at No. 1 and the team of Trevor Klotz and Trajan Schwartz won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

Plymouth won at No. 3 singles as Andy Rostron beat Jack Wysong 6-2, 6-0.

NorthWood improves to 5-3 overall and goes to 2-1 in NLC play.

The junior varsity match was a 4-4 tie. Winners for the Panthers were Ben Vincent, Skip McCoy and Dawson Bley in singles action and the doubles team of Tyler Hahn and Bryce Harner.

NorthWood plays NLC foe Goshen Thursday night.
