SOUTH BEND — People aren’t the only ones having to adjust to life after Hurricane Harvey. Cats and dogs are having to do the same; and Pet Refuge in South Bend is hoping to make things easier for them.
They’re taking in almost a dozen dogs that have been down in the Texas shelters; but these are not dogs that were lost in the storm damage. Shelters in the Texas area need to make room for dogs who were affected by the storm damage so they’re sending dogs who were already in shelters to places that could take them.
On Monday night, Pet Refuge brought in 11 dogs out of the thousands currently in the Texas shelters. That’s all the shelter could take in at the moment, but any number of dogs are happy to get out of an overcrowded shelter.
Volunteers tell NewsCenter 16 that even after the long flight and drive, the dogs are just as loving as ever.
“They’re tired, they’re stressed, they’re exhausted,” Pet Refuge President Pam Comer said. “But I will tell you that when we opened the crates in Waukegan to potty them, they all loved us. They did. We didn’t have any grouchy ouchies. Everybody was glad to see us and they were glad to get out of the kennels and to get a little grass time.”
Pet Refuge still has to get to know a bit about each dog, but afterward, all 11 of the Texan dogs will be up for open adoption.
If you’d like to help out and can’t adopt, money for any medications, spaying and neutering are always welcome. Click here to check out their website.
If you’re wanting to donate food, they ask for Purina One Lamb and Rice.
