Three-Year-Old Child Airlifted After Being Struck By Car In Driveway

The child was struck in the driveway of 3911 South CR 780W, Mentone.

UPDATE — Officers responded to the incident at 1:07 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, 3911 S. 780W, Mentone. Matthew D. Hume, 16, 3911 S. 780W, Mentone, was driving a 2009 Toyota with passenger Carina M. Belcher, 16, McArthur Drive Lot 24, Fort Wayne.

Pedestrian, Eli Swick, 4, North Side Drive, Warsaw, was pinned under a vehicle and complained of pain to the chest. Hume advised he was backing down the driveway when he heard screaming, he then stopped and found that the juvenile pedestrian was pinned under the vehicle. Mentone Fire Department extricated the juvenile pedestrian that was transported by Samaritan Air ambulance. The juvenile pedestrian’s father was at the scene when crews responded and rode with the juvenile pedestrian to the hospital.

Hume and his father were taken to KCH for a chemical test.

There were no actual witnesses to the crash, that observed it happen.

MENTONE — A three-year old child was transported by medical helicopter this afternoon, Sept. 4, after being struck by a car in a Mentone driveway.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Lutheran EMS, Four Way EMS and Mentone Fire Department all responded to the residence of 3911 South CR 780W, Mentone at 1:14 p.m. A three-year-old child had been struck by a vehicle in the residence’s driveway. Emergency crews had to stabilize the vehicle in order to safely remove the child from underneath it.

The child was conscious and breathing and transported to Parkview Fort Wayne by a medical helicopter.
