WARSAW — Each September since 1987, school libraries, public libraries and the American Library Association celebrate nationally Library Card Sign-up Month so that at the start of the school year every child owns a library card and uses it. During this 30th anniversary, libraries are highlighting the ongoing value of a library card. Library access equals opportunity.

Libraries provide an important educational role in the development of children. A library card is a ticket to educational resources and activities. Studies indicate that children who use the public library, read at home or have loved ones read to them do better in school and are more likely to use the library for lifelong learning as adults.

Parents and caregivers can ensure children have a library card as a first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning! Library cards are generally free to residents living in a library district. Warsaw Community Public Library requires applicants to be at least five years old.

Public libraries are America’s great information equalizers – the only place people of all ages and backgrounds find and freely use a diversity of resources and new technologies, along with the expert guidance of librarians. As society changes and how it consumes information, libraries evolve also.

Warsaw Community Public Library provides no-fee access to Wi-Fi, computers, and technology. Library staff help visitors find reading resources, learn Internet skills, access online sources, and complete e-government forms. In addition, libraries provide access to magazines, DVDs, computers, games, software, e-books and e-devices.

Public libraries offer 4.3 million programs a year. At Warsaw Community Public Library, a variety of programs stimulate reading and learning including age specific story hours, seasonal reading programs, educational classes, music programs, clubs, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs, in-person/virtual homework help, technology workshops, maker events, board/digital game programs and the literacy/technology expertise of librarians.

Libraries strengthen local economies and create healthier communities as patrons receive help with job applications, interviewing skills and use of career databases and online health resources. Libraries are transforming lives and communities through education.
