MIDDLEBURY – The memories are slowly fading for the once hotly contested ‘WogoBowl’. Tom Wogomon and his Northridge Raiders scored 30 unanswered points to crush Wawasee, 37-12, Friday night in the Northern Lakes Conference opener for both clubs.

The former Wawasee coach, who manned the sidelines for six seasons before taking over at Northridge in 2013, has moved past his years in Syracuse and has the Raiders headed in the right direction. After falling behind 12-7 when Jacob Hand caught two passes for 84 yards on a scoring drive for Wawasee – the touchdown for 14 yards – the Raiders clamped down.
Northridge responded with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Nick Hooley to Kyle Carson, and just before the half, Connor Utley caught a slant pass down to the Wawasee 10, setting up a 27-yard field goal by Nolan Laughlin just before the half.
Up 17-12, Northridge wasn’t out of the woods yet, but got the break it needed.
Wawasee decided to pooch kick to open the second half, and recovered it. But Utley made possibly the play of the night on Wawasee’s drive by picking off Aaron Evans and putting the Raiders in great shape. Northridge then marched down the field and closed it with a Hooley 16-yard touchdown run, giving Ridge the 24-12 lead.
Zac Linnemeier tried to keep Wawasee in the game, picking off a Raider pass at the Wawasee four and racing down to the opposite 35. But the Warriors stalled on the 26 after Micah Yoder swatted down an Evans pass on fourth down. Ridge took its next possession down and scored, Julius Graber racing around end on fourth and goal for seven yards. Connor Graber would score late from six yards out to send the Raider faithful home happy.

Northridge held firm control of its attack, running 54 plays for 415 total yards, 255 of those coming on the ground. Tug Modglin led the Raiders with 66 yards while Connor Graber and Hooley each had 56 yards. Hooley threw for 160 yards, Carson making just two catches for 72 yards, but both were for touchdowns, his first score going for 28 yards in the first quarter.
Hand was a major factor for Wawasee, compiling 226 total yards, including a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter. Hand had five catches for 92 yards.
Wawasee welcomed back its feature back, Alec Rosbrugh, from an ankle injury he suffered in the scrimmage against Marian, but didn’t have any luck on the ground against the stout Raider defense. Wawasee rushed a total of 30 times for 31 yards, Rosbrugh being held to 32 yards on 16 carries and Evans to minus-two yards on 12 attempts.
Wawasee coach Mike Eshbach was not immediately available for comment following the game.
The Warriors (1-2) have a another huge test next Friday when it hosts 3-0 Concord, the Minutemen fresh off a 15-12 upset of Class 4-A No. 1 NorthWood. Northridge (3-0) will visit Plymouth, the undefeated Rockies also off a huge win in a 42-7 romp at Warsaw.
