Donald D. Smith, 91, formerly of Syracuse, passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017 at Lakeland Health Care.

He was born on December 29, 1925 in Buchanan, Mich. to Ivan and Camilla Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Lowell Smith, sister Marilyn Schinske, and ex-wife and friend Margaret Payne.

Don is survived by his brother Darrell Smith, brother in-law Marvin Schinske, his children Vicki (Vince) Hamada, Mike Smith, Roger (Joan) Smith, Doug Smith, and Teresa (Erik) Bartman, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Don served in the Navy during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign from 1944-1946.  He was later employed by Wilt Industries, Weatherhead, and retired from Syracuse Rubber Company after 32 years on September 23, 1993.  Don’s family gatherings meant so much to him.  He had been an avid bowler and enjoyed constructing model airplanes earlier in life.  Don was a lifelong Cubs fan and the family was thrilled that the Cubbies won the World Series during his lifetime.

A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 2-4 p.m. at the Eastlund Funeral Home followed by Military Honors.
