MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Police Dept. needs your help finding the suspect in a hit and run that killed a five-year-old girl on Tuesday evening.
It happened just before 6 p.m in the 300 block of Broadway Street.
The officer who arrived on scene attempted CPR on Delaney Klewer, and she was taken to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.
Police say Delaney was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross Broadway Street with her 8-year-old sister. Officers tell NewsCenter 16 they were only about a block from home, walking to a nearby park.
The sister was not hurt.
The vehicle, which was traveling westbound, drove off. It was originally described by witnesses as a black or dark gray SUV. Police released a surveillance photo Wednesday afternoon showing a light-colored SUV.
On Wednesday afternoon, the family talked about how it’s not uncommon for cars to speed through the neighborhood.
“After we left the hospital, I came down here just to see the site. I found it instantly by the blood stain on the street, and it’s almost as big as she is. So I parked my truck in the middle of the road on that side, threw on my flashers, and I just sat down and started talking with my baby,” Matthew Klewer explained. “While I was sitting out here, at least three cars drove by, doing 40 to 50 miles an hour, and they just didn’t slow down, even with a big truck with flashing lights on in the middle of the street.”
