Charlene Jean Miller, 72, Wakarusa, formerly of Nappanee, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend after complications from a stroke.

Jean was born on Feb. 15, 1945 in Nappanee, to Noble and Judith (Williams) Rhodes. She married Arthur L. Miller on Jan. 26, 1960. 

Jean’s great joy in life was serving others, and she did so in many ways, including serving eggs, toast, and coffee to the many customers over the years who frequented her two restaurants, Grandma’s Grill, and Happy Days Cafe. She also cared for neighbors, friends, and family who could not care for themselves. She exemplified a strong work ethic, and always put others before herself. 

Surviving are her husband, Arthur, children, Colleen (Barry) Card, of Carmel, Glen Miller of Milford, Rex (Kris) Miller of New Carlisle, Philip (Megan) Miller of Wakarusa, 12 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, brothers Robert (Kathy) Rhodes of Nappanee, and Kenneth Rhodes of Goshen, and her furry children, Coco, Chico, and Pugley. 

Preceding her in death are her parents, grandson Joshua Miller, and brother Donald Rhodes. 

Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, June 23 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.  Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m. also at the funeral home. Pastor Glen Miller, of Maple City Chapel, will officiate.  Cremation will follow and Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be given to Beacon Health Foundation Stroke Unit in Memory of Charlene “Jean” Miller.

The family is grateful for all of the doctors, nurses, aides, friends and family that helped with mom live her last days at home.
