ELKHART – Krystal Grubb is no stranger to the State Finals.

The Elkhart Memorial tennis star, though, will have company with her this time around as she heads to the season finale.

The Crimson Charger program, for the first time in school history, will have both its top singles player and its top doubles team in the State Finals Friday.

The State Finals begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis with quarterfinal matches for both No. 1 singles players and No. 1 doubles teams, who have advanced undefeated through the state tournament series. Semifinals are at 10 a.m. Saturday with the finals at 2 p.m.

Senior Grubb will be joined in Indianapolis by senior Maggie Dickerson and junior Layla Jojo. All three players from coach Alex Holtz’s squad earned a berth in the State Finals by winning titles at the LaPorte Regional this past Saturday.

Grubb lost in the quarterfinals at State last year and was also at the team State Finals as the No. 1 singles player for Memorial her freshman year.

Grubb, who is bound for IUPUI, is 25-0 on the season and 88-9 in her brilliant career. She is the program’s all-time leader in wins after surpassing sister Katie, who was 86-9. Katie, a 2009 EMHS graduate, went on to play at Bowling Green.

Grubb, who was also the setter for the Memorial volleyball team, was honored last week with the Catherine Wolf Award. The accolade is given annually to the top senior female athlete in the Elkhart Community Schools system.

Grubb will face Makenzie Myers of Evansville Memorial in her quarterfinal match. Myers, a senior, is 20-3. The winner will then face either Delta sophomore Eleah Snider (20-4) or Castle junior Madison Devillez (15-4) in a semifinal match.

Dickerson and Jojo have compiled a 13-4 mark while playing together this Spring for the Chargers. The duo won a pair of three-set matches, both in which they dropped the first set, to win at LaPorte.

Dickerson and Jojo are 5-0 in the postseason this year and the pair helped Memorial reach the team semistate a year ago while playing together at the top doubles spot.

The Memorial tandem will face sophomores Mia Toscos and Lauren VanWyngarden of Carroll in a quarterfinal. The Carroll team is 27-2.

The winner of the Memorial-Carroll match will play either the South Bend St. Joseph team of senior Talle Corrigan and freshman Kayla Graham or the Yorktown duo of freshman Samantha Academic and senior Maddia Minnier in the semifinals. The St. Joe team is 17-0, while the Yorktown pair is 16-3.
