Former Warsaw girls basketball coach Michelle Harter was hired as the new girls basketball coach at Evansville Central High School Monday night.

WARSAW – It’s already been a good week for Michelle Harter.

The former Warsaw girls basketball coach is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Indiana All-Star team.

Harter, who was a standout player at Wawasee High School, has also landed a new coaching gig.

Harter was approved Monday night as the new girls basketball coach at Evansville Central High School. She replaces Brittany Maners, who left in April to take a coaching job at Princeton High School.

“I’m excited and this is definitely a big move for me,” said Harter in a phone interview Tuesday morning. “I feel like this is a great opportunity for me. I feel like Evansville Central is the place for me.”

“When I interviewed, I just felt comfortable there. I loved their athletic director and principal, just how personable and passionate both of them are about having a successful program.”

Harter spent a total of 26 years at WCHS, including the last nine as head coach of the girls hoops program. She posted a 136-70 record with a pair of sectional championships (2013, 2015) and two Northern Lakes Conference titles (2010, 2013). Her 2012-13 squad went 24-2 and won sectional and regional titles before losing to Fort Wayne South in the semistate.

Harter resigned from Warsaw in March with an interest at the time in pursuing possible college coaching opportunities. She was the junior varsity coach at WCHS for 16 years before taking over as head coach.

Harter helped lead her Wawasee team in 1985 to a state run-up finish and a 23-2  during her junior season. She went on to a standout career at Huntington University, where she scored 1,693 points and had 945 rebounds.

Evansville Central was 23-2 this past season and won its third straight Class 4-A sectional title. The school, which was founded in 1854, is the oldest high school west of the Allegheny Mountains.

“They have a good program in place and have been successful,” said Harter of Central. “I just feel like this is a fresh opportunity for me to in and establish myself there. It was just the right time for me to take on a different opportunity even though it’s tough moving away from my family.”

Harter, who ranks second all-time in games coached and games won in the Warsaw girls basketball program, led the Tigers to a 20-4 mark this past season. The team had six seniors on the roster, including its top two scorers in Dayton Groninger and Madi Graham.

Harter, who will teach physical education and health at Central, did have a quip about landing at the southern end of the Hoosier State.

“I always said that if I left Warsaw I was going South and I did that,” concluded Harter with a chuckle.

Lenny Krebs, who spent the last 14 years as the girls basketball coach at Goshen High School, was hired in April to replace Harter at WCHS. Krebs, who played at Fairfield High School and Grace College, is the sixth girls coach in WCHS history.
