CONVERSE – It was all about the rain and the reign for the Whitko softball team Friday night.
The Wildcats, who saw their sectional finale starting time pushed up due to the weather, then went on to reign supreme in the end.
Whitko outlasted host Oak Hill 1-0 in eight innings Friday night to claim the Class 2-A sectional championship.
The No. 10 Wildcats earn the fourth sectional title in program history and the first since winning a Class 3-A crown back in 2005.
Anna Ousley proved to be the posteseason hero in this one for the champions, who beat a pair of ranked teams to win a tough sectional. Ousley cracked an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to send home Emmie Duggins with the game’s lone run. Duggins had reached earlier in the frame on a double of her own.
Ellie Snep once again took care of things in the circle for Whitko. Snep allowed just two hits, while striking out six. She struck out a pair in the final inning, including one for the final out of the win.
Kennedy Krull and Reannon Hopkins each had a hit for the Wildcats, who had four in the victory.
Whitko, now 22-5, will play at either No. 19 Winamac of Delphi in a one-game regional Tuesday night. Winamac will face Delphi on Monday in the title game of the Carroll (Flora) Sectional.
Oak Hill, ranked No. 22, finishes its season 20-8.
