Dean Smith, 85, Rochester, passed away at 2:14 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2017 at his residence.

On March 5, 1932, Lloyd Dean Smith was born in Rochester.  He was the treasured son of  Fred L. and  Clidia  White  Smith.  Dean graduated from Monterey High School in 1950, serving as class president.

Answering the call of patriotism, Dean enlisted with the US Navy.  His stint spanned for over 24 years while he served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He entered the Navy as a seaman recruit and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Service Corps.

On Jan. 11, 1958 in the chapel of a navel hospital in Quantico, Va., Dean married the love of his life Wanda Jerine Farber.  They shared 51 years of life’s adventures. From their union came four wonderful children.  The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of three grandchildren.

Many remember Dean as a gentle man with a helping heart.  He served Fulton County as Civil Defense director for a number of years.  Dean attended the Rochester Church of God.

Left to cherish Dean’s memory are  two daughters: Robin L. Simmons of Charleston, S.C.; and Julie Baker of Portland, Ore.; a son, Michael Dean Smith and wife Lore of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren: Christopher Park Simmons, Ashlyn Marie Pedroza and husband Jovanny, and Aaron Dean  Smith.

Preceding Dean in death are his parents, beloved wife Wanda on Aug. 13, 2009 and a son, Steven C. Smith on April 24, 1988.
Pastor Larry Pyeatt will  officiate services.  Military honors will be conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the US Navy Honors Team.  Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
