Wawasee clinched at least a share of the Northern Lakes Conference softball crown with a 5-1 win over Northridge Wednesday in Syracuse.

The win, Wawasee’s 22nd straight in the Northern Lakes Conference, saw the Lady Warriors respond for a 1-0 deficit in the third inning with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, followed by two runs in the fourth to take command.

Meghan Fretz did the job in the circle, giving up just five hits and striking out four to pick up her 11th win of the season. Fretz also hit her fifth homer and drove in her 29th, 30th and 31st runs of the season on a three-hit night.

Aubrey Kuhn added two hits and a run scored, Ale Brito and Amber Lemberg had two hits and Kayla White drove in a pair in the win.

Wawasee moves to 18-3 on the season and is 11-0 in the NLC with three games remaining. The loss drops Northridge to 8-3 in the conference and 14-7 overall.

The Wawasee JV remained perfect in NLC play with a 9-6 win against Northridge. Grace Allen had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the victory. Wawasee moves to 10-3 overall and 9-0 in the conference.

Wawasee will travel to Plymouth Friday in hopes of sealing up the conference title for the third straight season.

Baseball

Northridge had its bats working overtime Wednesday in a odd doubleheader sweep of Wawasee.

Returning to a 6-6 tie from a 10-inning game back in late April that was called due to darkness, Northridge broke out the whoopin’ sticks to claim a 15-8 win, then come back to play the scheduled game two and win that 8-1.

The nine-run outburst in the first game included a pair of homers, and the swinging kept on in game two. After Wawasee took a 1-0 lead in the game on a Raider error, Northridge took over. Plating single runs in the third and fourth, a four-run fifth and two more in the sixth continued the theme for the Raiders.

Nick Hooley hit a two-run homer and Max Teunissen added a two-run single for Ridge, which moves to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in the NLC.

Wawasee struggled at the plate, not recording a hit after the first inning after collecting three in the first inning. Blake Norris took the loss for the Warriors, working 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs.

Wawasee (8-12, 4-7 NLC) will host Plymouth Friday in its senior night.
