Mary M. Hooker-Kessel, 90, formerly of Terre Haute, died at 11:02 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Miller’s Oak Pointe, Columbia City where she had been a resident since December 2014.

She was born June 3, 1926 in Ferguson Hill, a daughter of the late Morgan and Fern (Hash) Simmons. Her formative years were spent in the Terre Haute area where she completed her formal education at Rankin High School, Terre Haute.

On Jan. 16, 1944 she was united in marriage to Ernest H. Hooker. They made their home in Terre Haute. Mr. Hooker died in 1983. In 2000, she married Raymond Kessel. They continued to live in Terre Haute. He died in 2003.

She was a full-time home maker until her children where raised, then she worked for General Electric, Fort Wayne, and finished her work career as a custodian for Whitley County Consolidated Schools.

She was a member of Abundant Life Tabernacle, Fort Wayne.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Russel, Terre Haute and Donna (Butch) Johnson, Seelyville; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd (Carol) Simmons, Elmira, N.Y.; Wally (Martha) Simmons and Ora (Sharon) Simmons, Columbia City; and two sisters, Bonnie (Gene) Skillman, Fort Wayne and Eleanor J. Everly, Columbia City.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Robert and Ernie Simmons and three sisters, Maxine Burwig, Lilly Duneweg and Phyllis Workman

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Union Township Cemetery at Coesse. The visitation will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Abundant Life Tabernacle.
