The Princeton University men’s basketball team, which will serve as the first-round foe on Thursday for Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament, has a pair of area ties to it.

The Tigers, members of the Ivy League, are coached by Mitch Henderson. Henderson, who is in his sixth season as Princeton’s coach, was a three-sport star at Culver Academy. Henderson was the 1994 South Bend Tribune Male Athlete of the Year after becoming the first athlete in school history to win 12 letters. He starred in basketball, football and baseball for the Eagles.

Henderson was drafted in the 29th round by the New York Yankees in the MLB Draft in 1994. He went on to have a standout basketball career as a player at Princeton, including helping the Tigers upset UCLA 43-41 in a first-round game in the NCAA Tournament in 1996.

Henderson spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Northwestern, under Bill Carmody (his coach at Princeton), before taking over the Tigers. He is 118-59 at Princeton, including a 63-21 mark in conference play.

Devin Cannady, a former star at Mishawaka Marian High School, is the leading scorer for Princeton. The 6-1 sophomore guard is averaging 13.7 points-per-game for his team. Cannady ranked third on the team a year ago as he averaged 11.6 points-per-game.

Cannady, who is an outstanding shooter, is hitting 42 percent from distance and nearly 94 percent from the free throw line this season for the Tigers.

Cannady ranks second in Marian program history with 1,475 career points (trailing only former Notre Dame star and current Boston Celtic Demetrius Jackson) and was an Indiana All-Star following his senior season in 2015.

No. 22 Notre Dame, a No. 5 seed, will meet the No. 12 seed Tigers at 12:15 p.m. Thursday in an opening game of the West Regional at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. The Irish are 25-9 and lost to Duke in the championship game of the ACC Tournament Saturday night. The Tigers are 22-6 and have won 19 games in a row and went 14-0 to win the Ivy League championship. The game will be televised by CBS.

The winner of the Notre Dame-Princeton game advances to play either West Virginia or Bucknell on Saturday in a second-round matchup.
