WARSAW — Ysabel Lozano has lived in Warsaw less than a year, but she is already making a big impact on the community.
Lozano is a volunteer at Kosciusko Community Senior Services. She said that because she has worked with seniors in the past, she wanted to see how she could be of help at KCSS. She states, “I just want to be an asset somehow.”
Lozano moved here from Chicago in the spring of 2016. She was involved with senior housing, as a property manager, when she lived in Chicago.
According to staff at KCSS, Lozano assists in many ways. Lozano is bilingual, so she helps translate for Latino seniors attending KCSS. She also helps translate at the Kosciusko YMCA and is on the Warsaw Housing Authority board.
David Neff, executive director of KCSS, praises Lozano for “going above and beyond” when it comes to volunteering.
Lozano explains that volunteering at KCSS enables her to utilize her skills and education to help aging people. She states, “It gives me the opportunity to come here and talk to people one on one and share information.”
When Lozano first started coming to KCSS she was using a cane and had some issues with her health. She states that it took a while for her to get her strength back, but her health improved as she came each day to KCSS. According to Lozano, “It gave me purpose. It gave me a reason to get up – to come here and make friends.”
Kosciusko Community Senior Services, located at 800 North Park Avenue, Warsaw, has a senior center with a gym. Seniors can get exercise by walking on the track or participating in activities such as chair aerobics. The senior center offers health workshops, blood pressure screenings and foot clinics. Seniors may also participate in activities such as bingo, euchre, dominoes and crafts.
Lozano is happy to be involved with KCSS, stating “I’m so glad I found this place when I first moved here.”
