There was plenty to like this weekend for Warsaw boys and girls track coach Matt Thacker.

There’s also still plenty of work to be done too for his pair of talented teams.

The Warsaw boys team opened its season Saturday by competing in an HSR Qualifier at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

The outstanding long jump duo of D’Andre Steet and Rane Kilburn highlighted the day for the Tigers. Street soared 20-8.5, while Kilburn went 20-6. Those jumps rank the pair currently fourth and fifth respectively in the state.

The 4 X 200 relay team of Kilburn, Will McGarvey, Street and Alijah Wade went 1:35.66, the ninth best mark in the state. The 4 X 400 relay team of Bishop Harrison, Justus Voss, Tristan Larsh and Street clocked in at 3:38.87, 10th best. The 4 X 800 relay team of Xavi Ramirez, Kennis Dye, Isaac Mitchell and Justin Fleming went 8:56.84, which is 17th fastest.

The distance medley relay team of Fleming, Ramirez, Dye and Ridley Lemon clocked in at 11:43.5. Joseph Harness also cleared 6-0 in the high jump.

The girls’ team took part in HSQ Qualifiers at IWU and Trine University Saturday to open the season.

The 4 X 400 relay team of Maygen Bellmay, Shunterra Davis, Kenzie Martz and Abby Curtis led the way. The quartet clocked in at 4:13.05, the fourth best mark in the state so far.

The 4 X 800 relay team of Dayton Groninger, Angie Sanchez-Vigil, Curtis and Anna Craig finished in 9:56.86, which is the fifth fastest time in the state. The 4 X 200 relay team of Curtis, Bellamy, Makayla Clampitt and Kaia Hummitch went 1:51.56, the eighth fastest time. The distance medley relay team of Craig, Groninger, Emma Bohnenkamper and Mia Beckham clocked in at 13:21.23, also good for eighth best in the state.

Charlene Orr toured the 3,200-meter run in 11:51.98. Her time is eighth best in the state. Also, Clampitt went 8.33 in the 60-meter dash and Davis went 15-2.5 in the long jump.

The throwers from the girls’ team took part in the Region Rumble Friday night at Portage High School. The Tigers were fourth as a team with 478.5 points.

Emily Bailey led the way for the group with a toss of 33-2. Page Desenberg was next with a 31-7 effort, followed by Natalie Nichols (30-3.25) and Sierra Davis (27-6.25).

Madison Haines had a throw of 27-4, while Lynae Dawson went 27-3.75. Abby Doberstein went 27-3 and Mykenzie Burns 23-5.

The teams will return to indoor action next Saturday with HSR Qualifiers at both IWU and IPFW.

The girls team is slated to open its outdoor season on March 22 at Penn in a triangular with the host Kingsmen and South Bend Washington.

The boys team is scheduled to host Fort Wayne Snider and East Noble in their outdoor opener on March 23.
