Warsaw Basketball: Cold Shooting Key In Loss
FORT WAYNE – A tough shooting second half proved costly for the Warsaw boys basketball team Friday night.
The Class 4-A No. 5 Tigers dropped a 50-37 final at Homestead in a non-conference clash.
Warsaw shot just 4-20 from the field in the final half to fall to 2-1 on the season. The Tigers finished only 12-40 from the field for the game, including 2-13 from 3-point land. Warsaw was just 1-9 from distance in the second half.
Senior Kyle Mangas, who scored 56 points in Warsaw’s first two wins over Tippecanoe Valley and Columbia City, led the Tigers with 18 points. The senior guard was just 5-18 from the field, including 1-5 from distance, in the loss.
Homestead, which lost 75-60 at Warsaw last season, led 13-11 after the opening period. The Tigers rallied to a 24-21 halftime lead before the Spartans took a 32-30 lead after three quarters. The hosts then outscored Warsaw 18-7 in the final frame to pull away to the win.
Jeremy David scored six points for the Tigers. Jack Rhoades finished with five points, while Asher Blum had four. Ross Johnson and Braxton Minix each had two points.
Mangas and David each grabbed five rebounds as Warsaw was dead even in that department at 28-28 with the host Spartans.
Homestead shot 14-37 overall from the field, including 5-19 from distance. The hosts were 17-22 from the line (Warsaw was 11-12). The Spartans had just six turnovers in the game to nine for the Tigers.
Brandon Durnell led the winners, now 2-0, with 14 points. Jack Ferguson had 11 points and Sam Buck added 10 for Homestead.
Homestead won the junior varsity game 42-40. Trevor Rumple scored 12 points and Tyler Metzinger added eight to lead Warsaw.
The Warsaw freshman squad beat Homestead 39-30. Blake Marsh led the way with 15 points and Wyatt Amiss was close behind with 10 points.
Warsaw (2-1) plays at Huntington North Saturday night. Homestead edged Huntington North 48-44 in their season opener on Nov. 23. Homestead (2-0) plays at Marion Saturday night.
