Bethel Basketball: Pilots Stay Unbeaten
GOSHEN – The No. 16 ranked Bethel College men’s basketball team continued their early-season play on Saturday afternoon against Lourdes University (Ohio) and came away with a convincing 104-73 victory.
Sophomore Paul Forman led the undefeated Pilots with 19 points shooting 7-of-10 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line as the Pilots went 2-0 in the Maple City Hoopfest held at Goshen College.
After a slow start, the Pilots would set the tone defensively holding Lourdes to just 34 percent shooting from the field in the first half while going 0-of-5 from three-point range.
With 15:44 left to play in the first half Nick Kindig was able to knock down a triple that would begin a 12-2 run for the Pilots, who would never look back. In the closing seconds of the half Trey’von Covington would hit a lay-up to give the pilots a commanding 27-point lead heading into halftime (54-27).
Forman led the way for the Pilots in the first half with 16 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the field. Nick Kindig added 12 points and six assists and Clay Yeo added 10 points. The Pilots shot 62 percent from the field, going 22-of-35, and 4-of-11 from behind the three-point line.
Lourdes struggled in the first half going just 8-of-23 from the field. Bristol Levert led the way for the Gray Wolves with 10 points.
During the early minutes of the second half the Pilots continued to expand their lead and with 4:29 left to play in the game the Pilots found themselves with their largest lead of the night (39) after a made free throw from Kyle Thompson.
The Pilots finished with five different players in double figures, Forman (19), Yeo (18), Kindig (17), Coon (12), and Wassink (10). The Pilots ended the night shooting 51 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the three-point arc.
The Gray Wolves were led by Levert who finished the night with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
The Pilots (3-0) will face the crosstown rival Holy Cross College on Tuesday night in their first home game of the year. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
