NAPPANEE – The NorthWood football team has been downright offensive this fall.
In a good way of course.
Don’t expect that to change come Friday night either.
Dp expect the scoreboard at East Noble to get some workout when the prolific Panthers take their unbeaten mark on the road to clash with the high-scoring Knights.
The No. 2 ranked Panthers, sporting an 11-0 record, will aim for a Class 4-A sectional title in Kendallville versus the potent No. 13 Knights, who enter the game at 8-2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Class 4-A Sectional 19 finale.
NorthWood has found its stride this season under third-year coach Nate Andrews. The Panthers, who were 14-9 in Andrews’ first two seasons at his alma mater, have returned to being the dominant power of the past in the program’s storied history.
NorthWood boasts an offense loaded with weapons as it goes for the 18th sectional title in program history and the first since 2011. The Panthers are also looking for their first 12-win season since finishing 12-1 in 1996.
The Panthers have piled up 504 points this fall to average nearly 45.8 points-per-game, the 12th best mark in the state. NorthWood, which has an average margin of victory of 28 points-per-contest, has scored 50 or more points six times this season.
The man who makes the Panther offense click is quarterback Trey Bilinski. The senior star directs an attack that averages 256 yards passing and 246 yards rushing per game. Bilinski is 162-260 through the air for 2,803 yards with 35 touchdown passes and just four interceptions.
NorthWood has a plethora of players who have made big plays all season long. Sophomore Bronson Yoder had scored 15 touchdowns, while junior DeAndre Smart has 13 and junior Brayton Yoder 12. Junior Landen Gessinger has nine scores to his credit and junior Payton Bear seven.
The Panther ground game has piled up 2,710 yards with balance. Brayton Yoder has 73 carries for 751 yards, while Bronson Yoder has 120 rushes for 661 yards and Bear 90 totes for 578 yards. Smart leads the receiving corp with 47 receptions for 917 yards. Bronson Yoder has 47 catches for 914 yards, while Gessinger and senior Drew Minnich each have 25 receptions.
The host Knights have proven they can light up the scoreboard too this fall. East Noble is averaging 40 points-per-contest. The Knights have won three in a row since a 55-21 loss to No. 4 New Haven, including a 40-22 win over Plymouth last week.
East Noble, who also lost 48-0 to Class 6-A Indianapolis Cathedral in its season opener, relies heavily on its passing game. The Knights are averaging 285 yards passing per game, while rushing for just 119 per contest. Junior quarterback Andrew McCormick is 211-292 passing for 2,688 yards with 42 touchdowns and six interceptions. McCormick also had 107 rushes for 638 yards and five more scores.
Senior Dylan Hunley is the go to man for the Knights. The senior receiver has 90 receptions for 1,373 yards and 21 touchdowns. Hunley had 14 receptions for 326 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-42 win at Warsaw in week two of the regular season. McCormick, in that game, was 31-42 passing for 452 yards and six touchdowns and also ran for 89 yards and another score.
Senior Justin Galavitz has 31 receptions, including nine touchdowns. Sophomore Kaiden Hershberger has 54 carries for 554 yards.
East Noble has won three sectional titles with the last coming in 2003.
The Panthers and the Knights have three common opponents this fall. NorthWood beat Warsaw 61-24 and Plymouth 43-12 en route to winning the Northern Lakes Conference title. The Panthers also rolled past Columbia City 52-13 in its sectional opener two weeks ago. Eat Noble topped Warsaw 47-42, beat Columbia City 48-0 and bested Plymouth 40-22 in a sectional semifinal game last week.
NorthWood defeated the Knights 42-28 in a first-round sectional game last season.
The NorthWood-East Noble winner will face No. 8 Fort Wayne Dwenger (8-3) or No. 4 New Haven (10-0) in a regional game Nov. 11. If the Panthers win Friday night, they would host New Haven or travel to Dwenger.
