The Leesburg Town Board approved the 2013 budget during Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, but the big topic of the meeting was an alley vacation request.

The Freedom Express gas station is in the process of acquiring the vacant Farmer’s State Bank Building to the south of the station.

The intent is to demolish both the current gas station and the bank building and rebuild a new, modern convenience store/gas station with expanded services. The proposed timeline includes closing on both properties by January 2013 with demolition of both buildings and the start of the new construction to be completed in 60 days to 90 days.

The alley currently has a sewer easement in place. The board expressed concern regarding pressurized sewer lines and grinding pumps possibly being in the proposed vacation area. Following notification of the public and adjoining property owners, the actual vote on the vacation request will take place at the next board meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12.

The 2013 budget has allotted some funds for sidewalk replacements in town. The board is looking to establish a policy making this a cooperative endeavor with property owners. Information on how other local towns handle this will be presented at the November meeting.

Street commissioner Brandon Queen reported that all town equipment is in good working order and by the end of the month the salt and sand will be ready for the winter season.

Queen also reported that leaf pick-up has begun and it would be appreciated if branches, rocks and other debris were separated from the leaf piles. He ended with the good news that there were no ordinance violations to report.

The Leesburg Post Office is looking at changing its hours of operation. A survey has been sent to all local residents asking for input. At 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, a public meeting will be held to hear the opinions of town residents. That meeting will be at the Leesburg Town Hall.

Trick-or-treat times for Leesburg were announced. Those will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Halloween night.

The town of Leesburg will again have an evening of Christmas Cheer on Saturday, Dec. 15. There will luminaria throughout the town, town hall will be open with coffee, hot chocolate and cookies, and Santa will be there, too. For more information, call Christina Archer at 574-453-4961.
