Squires Claim Golf Glory With Sectional Title

HUNTINGTON  – The wait was well worth it for the Manchester girls golf team.

The Squires claimed the top prize Monday in the rain-delayed Huntington North Sectional.

A complete team effort, marked by consistency, carried Manchester to the program’s second sectional crown in program history. The other sectional title for the Squires came in 1973.

Manchester fired a round of 372 to top runner-up and host Huntington North by four strokes for the sectional hardware.

The sectional was postponed on Saturday due to heavy rain.

The Squires, who also won the Three Rivers Conference Tournament title at Norwood with a 377 back on Sept. 10, advance to the East Noble Regional on Saturday. Play at the Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville will begin at 8:30 a.m. The top three teams in the regional advance to the State Finals Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Carmel.

Karly Eichenauer came up big to lead the Squires to the sectional title. The senior, playing in the No. 5 spot in the lineup, fired a team-best 91 on Monday.

Sophomore Kelsey Eichenhauer, the No. 2 player in the sectional lineup, shot a 92 for the champion Squires.

Freshman Samantha Kissell shot a 93, while sophomore Madyson Ulrey came in with a 96. Junior Lydia Little, the No. 1 player for the Squires, shot a 98.

“I’m so proud of the girls today,” said Manchester coach Josh Troyer via email. “Wow.  Sectional Champs.  They had a couple rough holes and they battled for the team. This is truly a team win today and we had a bunch of great individuals that made it happen together.”

The trio of Manchester, Huntington North (376) and third place Southwood (394) advance as teams to the regional on Saturday. Northfield was fourth in the team standings with a 416, followed by Eastbrook (426), Marion (426), Madison Grant (428), Oak Hill (428), Mississinewa (464) and Wabash (466).

Dayne Dale of Southwood captured individual medalist honors with a round of 79.
