Warsaw SportsWARSAW – A quick start and a huge second half showing carried the red-hot Warsaw girls soccer team to another win Monday night.

Brenna Buhrt tallied three goals on the night as the host Tigers topped Fort Wayne Snider by a 6-1 final in non-conference play.

Warsaw, ranked No. 18 in Class 2-A, stretched its impressive winning streak to nine in a row. The Tigers, who have not lost since August 20, improve to 11-3 overall on the season.

Buhrt tallied the first goal in the first minute of play, off an assist from Dayle Harvey.

Snider tied the contest at 1-1 by intermission before the Tigers dominated the final half.

Warsaw tallied a trio of goals in a six-minute stretch early in the second half to take command. Sydney Wiedeman put her team ahead for good at 2-1 with a goal, assisted by Abby Steffensmeier, in the 45th minute. Buhrt then scored in the 49th and 51st minutes, off assists from Delaney Taylor and Julie Frazzetta to make it 4-1.

The Tigers closed out the big win on goals by Wiedeman and Frazzett in the 68th and 70th minutes of the match. Taylor and Buhrt collected the assists on the final pair of scores on the night.

“There are several names that need mentioned for recognition,” noted Warsaw coach Peter Luch via email. “First, Breck Jackson led the defense in really limiting Snider’s opportunities.  Second, Julie Frazzetta had a nice evening, winning balls and providing a goal and an assist.  Third, Sydney Wiedeman was a dangerous threat on the wing, putting in two goals on the evening.  Fourth, Delaney Taylor really made her mark in the game.  She was a constant engine and really connected well with her teammates in the second half, evidenced in part by her two assists.  And finally, Brenna Buhrt.  Ball winner.  Good distribution. 3 goals and 1 assist.  Enough said.”

“You couldn’t dream up a better start than scoring a goal in the first minute.  That said, with the way that we played the first half, we should have have walked into half-time with a good margin.  It is a good life lesson that it only takes one opportunity, and your opponent can find themselves back in the game.  I am proud of the way the girls focused on their finishing touches in the second half, and we are certainly going to prioritize finishing this week in practice.”

The Warsaw junior varsity topped Snider 2-1 to improve to 3-7 on the season. Amanda West had the first goal for the Tigers. Warsaw won the match on an own goal.

Warsaw returns to action Saturday by hosting Wawasee in a Northern Lakes Conference match. The Tigers boast a perfect 5-0 mark in NLC play.
