GARRETT – Tippecanoe Valley won its first tournament of the 2016 campaign, going 4-0 to capture the Garrett Invite championship Saturday. Tippy dunked Three Rivers Conference rival Whitko in the championship game 25-21, 27-25.

Valley beat Hamilton 2-0, New Haven 2-0 and Garrett 2-1 before meeting Whitko in the final.

Leading the way for Valley was Abby Betten, who had 21 kills and 29 digs in the tournament. Shayleigh Shriver added 24 digs, Makenzie Woodcox added 17 kills, Sophie Bussard had 11 aces, and the combo of Taniesha Brown and Emily Peterson hoisted 62 assists.

Whitko made the final by defeating Eastside and Churubusco in pool play. Stat leaders for the Wildcats were Kaity Reed with 37 kills, 28 digs, eight aces and five blocks. Kristine Slater had 36 digs, Brianna Tackett had 20 kills, and Haley Yohe had 76 assists.

Whitko plays Tuesday at Peru while Valley plays Tuesday at Manchester.
