WARSAW — The Warsaw Board of Works met for a very brief meeting on Friday, Sept. 2. Business consisted of approving various grants for the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department, change orders, pay applications, new hire approvals and travel requests.

Two separate grants were approved for the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department. The first grant was from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation for continuing support of the Central Park Concert Series. The grant of $5,000 was approved. The second grant, from Kosciusko REMC will be used for the 2017 Family Carnival. The grant of $1,500 was approved. A contract with a Yoga instructor was also approved for the October Yoga Basics Workshop.

Next a change order was approved for the Main Street sewer replacement project. The change amounted to $70,410. The majority of this cost was to fund an extra stretch of pipe that was discovered to be defective during the project. A pay application was also approved for Atlas Excavating to complete the work associated with the Main Street sewer replacement project.

Three additional pay applications were approved by the city. The first pay application was for the right-of-way acquisition services associated with the Husky Trail Project in the amount of $1,470. The second pay application was for preliminary engineering services for the Main Street Project in the amount of $9,567.52. The final pay application was for engineering services concerning the Buffalo Street Redevelopment Project in the amount of $6,834.48.

Five new hires were approved including two maintenance technicians and a plant operator for the Warsaw wastewater treatment plant, a parking/code officer for the police department and a groundskeeper for the cemetery.

Two travel requests were also approved. Joe Fretz with the fire department will be traveling to the 2016 Fire Inspectors Training Conference in Indianapolis. The total cost approved was $480. Jason Dobbins with the police department will be traveling to the Interviewing & Understanding Sexual Deviant Behavior conference in Indianapolis. The total cost approved for this trip was $577.

Mayor Joe Thallemer ended the meeting by saying that he thought tonight’s First Fridays was going to be great with a lot of activities. He also requested everyone be safe over the long, holiday weekend.
