Boys Tennis

The Warsaw boys tennis team notched a huge win in conference play.

The host Tigers edged past rival Plymouth 3-2 in Northern Lakes Conference action.

Warsaw got wins from Andrew Gauger and David Homme in singles play. Gauger beat Mitch Rose 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Homme topped Zach Moser 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3.

The Tigers also got a win at No, 2 doubles as Hayden Steger and Spencer Britton outlasted Hudston Yoder and Tommy Holloway 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

John Gerard of the Pilgrims defeated Colton Lind 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. The Plymouth No. 1 doubles team of Grant Clady and Nick Felke topped Justin Stout and Ryan Wettschurack 6-1, 6-3.

Warsaw beat a pair of possible regional foes in the past two days. The Tigers notched a 4-1 win Wednesday at Culver Academy.

Warsaw won the junior varsity action 7-3. Winning in singles play for the Tigers were Bailey Buhrt and Kyler Bartol. Claiming doubles wins for Warsaw were the teams of Nick Marsh and Ethan Hoff, Nolan Knight and Reuben Williams, Caleb Williams and Brandon Chan, Jarrett Orr and Jake Kauffman and Hawkins Ragland and Katon Waddle.

Warsaw, which improves to 5-2 overall and goes to 1-1 in the NLC,  returns to action on Tuesday night at NLC foe Northridge.

 

Boys Soccer

The Warsaw boys soccer team posted its first win of the season in the Carroll Tournament.

The Tigers topped Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian by a 1-0 final.

Blake Burns tallied the lone goal in the second half, assisted by Andrew Mevis, for the win.

Warsaw, now 1-2-2, will play again in the tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m.

 

Girls Soccer

The Warsaw girls soccer team just continues to win.

The Tigers picked up a 1-0 road win at Homestead Thursday night.

Mariah Rivera scored the game’s lone goal in the 10th minute, assisted by Breck Jackson.

“Things were not firing on all cylinders for us offensively,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht via email.  “At times there was good effort, but some of the link up play and connections that have enabled us to be successful this season were not there.  There was still a good effort given during stretches of the match, and at least defensively there was organization and discipline that lead to limited dangerous moments for the opponent.  Congratulations to the defense for posting a shutout.”

Homestead won the junior varsity match 3-0.

Warsaw, now  6-3 on the season, returns to action at NLC foe Elkhart Memorial Tuesday night. The Tigers then play a big league match at Concord next Thursday evening.

 

Girls Golf

It was some start for Delaney Wihebrink Thursday.

The Warsaw golfer notched a hole-in-one on her first hole of the night as the Tigers hosted NorthWood and Goshen in the final Northern Lakes Conference match of the regular season at the Stonehenge Golf Club.

Wihebrink went on to shoot a career-best 44 to pace the host Tigers in the NLC triangular.

NorthWood shot 168 to win the outing and wrap up its fifth straight NLC regular-season title. Coach Adam Yoder’s team has now won 36 straight league matches dating back to 2011.

Warsaw shot 190 and Goshen finished at 243.

Summer Stillson and Makenzie Weaver of the Panthers each shot 39 to lead the winner, who finish 7-0 in conference play.

Madi Graham fired a 46 and Page Desenberg a 49 for the Tigers, who finish at 2-5 in the NLC. Madelyn Ray shot a 51 and Izzy Ray had a 54 for Warsaw.

Madison Richner shot a 54, while Abby Slabaugh carded a 56 and Alaina Benjamin a 57 to round of the NorthWood scores.

Warsaw shot 229 to edge NorthWood (230) in the junior varsity match. Grayson Kilburn led the JV Tigers with a 51. McKenna Gall led NorthWood with a 55.

Warsaw hosts Manchester on Thursday. NorthWood will compete in the Culver Academy Invitational on Saturday at Swan Lake in Plymouth. The NLC Tournament is set for Sept. 10 at McCormick Creek in Nappanee.

Volleyball

The Warsaw volleyball program topped Goshen in Northern Lakes Conference play on all three levels Thursday night.

The Tiger varsity beat the hosts 25-17, 25-9, 25-22 to improve to 7-6 overall land 2-0 in the NLC.

Hanna Leach led the offense with seven kills. Nikki Parrett had six kills, while Kacy Bragg had five, Alexie Day four and Rachel Yeager and Katie Swanson one each.

Parrett and Brynn Durecki led the serving with three aces each. Day had two and Erin Peugh, Bragg and Swanson each had one. Leach had four blocks, Bragg three, Parrett two and Swanson one. Peugh led the defense with seven digs, while Day had four, Leach three, Parrett two and Bragg and Durecki one each.

Bragg had 19 assists in the win.

The Warsaw JV team won 25-17, 25-6 to move to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the NLC. Courtney Chookie had four kills for the winners. Jamie Grose and Cassadi Colbert each had three kills, while Emma Gelbaugh had two and Kenzie Martz and Addie Dickerhoff one each. Dickerhoff had 14 assists. Chookie had four aces, Grose three and Colbert and Gelbaugh two each. Amy Herendeen had five digs, Chookie three, Grose and Dickerhoff two and Martz and Claire Clements one each.
The Warsaw freshman team won: 25-8, 25-10, which makes them undefeated and 10-0 for the season. Sierra Derossett had five kills, Kaia Hummitch three, Brooklyn Slone, Sophia Long and Mckenna Hawblitzel two each and Katie Schmidt one. Schmidt had 15 assists. Schmidt also had 12 aces, while Long and Hawblitzel each had four, Slone three and Derossett two. Allie McGuire had 12 digs, while Long had four, Slone and Hawblitzel two each and Schmidt one.

The Warsaw JV team hosts its own invitational Saturday starting at 9 a.m. The varsity hosts NLC foe Northridge on Tuesday night.
