Caro’s Walkoff Sends Cubs Home Happy

SOUTH BEND – Roberto Caro hit a walk-off single with one out in the ninth inning, as the South Bend Cubs topped the Great Lakes Loons 2-1 on Monday.

Eddy Martinez scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a single by Matt Rose and then went to third on a sacrifice bunt.

In the bottom of the third, South Bend took the lead on a solo home run by Connor Myers. Great Lakes answered in the fifth inning when Zach McKinstry hit an RBI single, driving in Brendon Davis.

Reliever John Williamson (2-1) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out one to get the win. Tony Gonsolin (0-1) allowed one run and got one out in the Midwest League game.

South Bend resumes play Wednesday at West Michigan.
