South Bend Cubs Sports

DAYTON, Ohio – South Bend’s Alberto Mineo hit a three-run home run and Eloy Jiminez drove in four runs with a double and triple to lead the Cubs to a 10-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. The Cubs have won the first two games in the series.

South Bend scored one run in the second inning and added four more in the third, keyed by Mineo’s homer, to build a 5-0 lead over the first three innings. They added two more in the top of the seventh to lead 7-0.

The Dragons only run came in the bottom of the seventh on a long home run to left field by Tyler Stephenson, his third homer of the year. Stephenson’s drive hit the top of the concessions building beyond the left field fence, missing by less than a foot of reaching the videoboard. South Bend closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning.

The Cubs attack was aided by Connor Myers, who went 4 for 5 and scored two runs.

Dragons starting pitcher Tony Santillan (1-2) absorbed the loss. He worked four and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Lucas Benenati replaced Santillan and allowed two unearned runs in two innings of work. Tanner Rainey surrendered three runs in his only inning.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Shane Mardirosian had a single and double. Nick Senzel was 2 for 4 with two singles. Stephenson’s homer was the other extra base hit.

The Dragons (14-33, 35-82) host the Cubs (32-15, 73-43) on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
