NOBLE COUNTY — A 13-year-old Fort Wayne boy caught a spotted gar at Big Lake in Noble County on July 28 that weighed six pounds, setting a new state record. Jaxton Orr caught the gar on a rod and reel using cut baits according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Officially, Orr’s fish was 34.7 inches long with a girth of 11 3/8 inches.   The previous record gar was caught in 2014 in Sullivan County. That fish weighed 5.1 pounds.

Indiana began keeping size records on spotted gar in 2011. Nine-year-old Noah Smith of Delaware, Ohio, caught a 3.17-pound, 29 3/16-inch spotted gar in late June of that year from Crooked Lake in Steuben County to set the original record.
