Two of the state’s top boys soccer programs got together Tuesday night in Fort Wayne as Warsaw clashed with host Canterbury.

The Tigers, on the strength of an early goal by T.J. Hofer, came out on the winning end of a 1-0 final versus Canterbury.

Hofer’s unassisted goal in just the second minute of the contest lifted Class 2-A No. 3 Warsaw to the big win over Class 1-A No. 5 Canterbury.

Warsaw lost in the Class 2-A semi state final last year to eventual state champion Crown Point to finish 18-4-1. Cantebury concluded an 18-1-4 campaign by winning the Class 1-A state championship in 2011, its fourth state title.

Coach Scott Bauer’s Warsaw squad improved to 12-1-1 with Tuesday night’s victory. The Tigers have now outscored their opponents 41-7 this season. Canterbury drops to 7-5-1 with the loss.

Senior keeper Michael Yantz continued his stellar season in goal for the Tigers with eight saves in Tuesday’s win.

Warsaw plays a huge Northern Lakes Conference game at Goshen Thursday night. The Tigers are 3-0-1 in NLC play with just a 1-1 tie versus Concord as their lone blemish. Goshen improved to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-2 in league play with a 4-0 win over Wawasee Tuesday night.

The Thursday contest at Goshen begins with the JV game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity.
