ELKHART — There will be a caucus held at 11 a.m. Saturday June 25, at the meeting room at the Concord Mall to nominate Carl Rust as the Democratic candidate for the Indiana Senate District 12 seat that is being vacated by Carlin Yoder.

District 12 includes a large portion of Elkhart County and six precincts in Kosciusko County around Syracuse. No Democratic candidates ran in the May 3 primary so a caucus was called by Indiana State Democratic Chairman John Zody to fill the vacant ballot spot in the November election.

Rust, 59, filed the necessary paperwork with the state party and election division officials June 14 in Indianapolis. He was the chairperson for the Elkhart County for Bernie Sanders group that worked for on the Vermont Senator’s local campaign.

Rust was born in Kentucky, lived in Ohio most of his growing up years, graduated from Lima Senior High School in 1975. He worked in the newspaper business, sold insurance, worked for a family business before earning his Bachelors degree in 1988 in Elementary Education from The Ohio State University.

Rust began teaching for Elkhart Community Schools in 1989. He has taught Second, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth grades. He earned his Master’s Degree in 2001 from Indiana Wesleyan University and received his Administrator’s License in 2003. He was assistant principal at Mary Feeser Elementary School for eight years and now he is Director of Elkhart Elementary Academy. He has been married to his wife Robin for 24 years and has four grown children and nine grandchildren.
