WARSAW — A new food program is beginning to take root among the members of the Warsaw Community Grace Brethren Church. Called Love In Action, the food program intends to offer a free meal to those without the money to feed themselves in Central Park at noon every third Wednesday of the month until September.
“I’ve always heard people say, ‘why don’t we help people at home,’ and this is one way we can,” Sue Kruger, founder of the program, said.
“A couple of months ago I went to Urban Hope, an outreach program with Grace College. I went to help out in the Kensington area of Philly … We send a lot of missionaries around the world, but so many churches forget that we need missionaries right here, and that is kind of what I took from that,” Kruger continued.
Kruger and her church plan to offer more than just a free meal, however. “What we want to do is just say ‘Hi, we’re here, we’ll listen to you and we’ll pray for you’ and in the process we’ll give them food with no strings attached … You have to learn to listen to their story and sometimes it’s heartbreaking,” she said.
The future of the program is a little unsure, but Kruger would like to see it expand. “We’re going to be doing it once a month this year, and if it takes off and we do well … I want to do it a couple of times a month next year,” She said, describing her future plans for the program.
The program operates entirely on the goodwill of others, and they accept donations to help pay for the food that they provide. “[We accept donations] through Warsaw Community Grace Brethren Church at 909 South Buffalo Street. Just tell them it’s for Love In Action,” Kruger stated.
