Several questions have been raised in regards to construction occurring at 701 N. Harrison St., Syracuse, where a new roof recently went up on a structure involved in a fire June 19.

According to Syracuse Building Inspector Hal Hansborough, every thing is legal with land contract purchaser Eleazar Cadena having received all the proper permits from the county and the town of Syracuse, in addition to having the property inspected.

“There are no problems,” said Hansborough. “First thing he did was come and see me.” Hansborough states, he then directed Cadena to draw up his plan and submit it to the county, which issued their permit for re-roofing Aug. 14.

“He got all the permits,” Hansborough said. “When they bring in the county permit, we can’t deny them locally.”

Cadena will have to strip the home to down to the studs, states Hansborough, but before he can do that a new roof was a must to prevent water damage.

“The roof has to be up to be able to get work started on the interior,” said Hansborough.

Cadena will be redoing the plumbing, rewiring, removing fire damaged siding and boards as well as completing work in the basement and installing a new furnace and deck.

“When he completes the project, I will inspect it again,” said Hansborough. He added, when done, the home will be a two bedroom, two bath apartment.

According to sources, the Syracuse Public Library had expressed interest in purchasing the property. Another source states Candena was willing to sell the property but received no offer.
