INDIANAPOLIS — A tragic accident at Fort Hood, which left nine soldiers dead, now hits a bit closer to home for Hoosiers.
One of the soldiers killed after a truck hit a flooded area and overturned in Texas is identified as Cadet Mitchell Winey, a Valparaiso native.
The 21-year-old graduated from Chesterton High School, reported to West Point in 2014, and was set to graduate in two years.
Winey was in Fort Hood for Cadet Troop Leader Training.
Sunday, June 5, Indiana governor Mike Pence directed all flags across the state be lowered to half-staff to honor Winey.
In a statement, Pence said, “I urge Hoosiers to remember the courage, service, and sacrifice of this young cadet.”
