Streaking Whitecaps Win Again
SOUTH BEND – West Michigan extended their win streak to ten games after beating the South Bend Cubs 2-1 at Four Winds Field.
Beau Burrows was the story for West Michigan as he goes the first six innings for the Whitecaps giving up no runs on one hit. The first round pick of the Detroit Tigers got some help from center fielder Derek Hill who chased a long drive by Eloy Jimenez in the fourth inning. With his back to home plate Hill made a “Willie Mays style” basket catch that turned into a double play.
West Michigan picked up an unearned run in the fourth inning and tallied another run in the 7th on a Jose Zambrano sacrifice fly.
The Cubs picked up their lone run in the bottom of the seventh as Ian Rice singled bringing home Donnie Dewees who led off the frame with a double.
South Bend thought they tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.
The Cubs had the bases loaded with one out when Donnie Dewees grounded the ball to second. The Whitecaps got the out at second and the relay throw to first retired Dewees despite replays showing otherwise. Instead of a tie game, South Bend still trailed 2-1.
South Bend and West Michigan will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Four Winds Field. Game 1 at 6 features Carson Sands on the mound for the Cubs with Casey Blomquist starting game 2.
