Did you know that disease killed twice as many soldiers during the U.S. Civil War than did battle wounds or that 11,880 women were accepted into the U.S. Navy and 305 into the Marine Corp during World War I?

In the 15 years of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, no official declaration of war was ever made by Congress.

These are some of the interesting facts you’ll discover during the North Webster Public Library’s month-long “We Remember American War Series” that starts Tuesday, Oct. 2, and will be held at 5 p.m. every Tuesday evening through Oct. 30.

Sponsored by the North Webster Public Library’s Local History and Genealogy Center, this five-session series will explore 200 years of United States military history from 1775 through 1975.

Each Tuesday session will focus on a different war, beginning with the American Revolution and War of 1812 on Oct. 2 and followed by the Civil War on Oct. 9, World War I on Oct. 16, World War II on Oct. 23, and concluding with the Korean and Vietnam conflicts on Oct. 30.

Topics will include weaponry; medical practices and advancements; implementation of new units, strategies, and practices; uniforms and standard equipment; customs and traditions; and other interesting subjects. Informative materials, speakers, first-hand accounts, artifacts, photographs, and much more will be part of the presentation. You’ll also learn what the library has to offer including fiction and nonfiction reading materials, movies, and local history. Come and learn as we salute our United States Military men and women, past and present. The “We Remember American War Series” is open to the public free of charge.

It’s time for another Friends of the Library Book Sale this weekend Sept. 27-29 in the North Webster Community Center Banquet Hall. Hundreds of gently used adults’ and children’s books, movies, games and puzzles will be on sale starting as low as 25 cents. With colder weather around the corner, you’ll want to stock up on lots of books to curl up with in front of the fireplace or under a warm afghan. Sale hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. All proceeds go to support the Library, so come and get a bargain while helping the Library.
