SYRACUSE – Two Wawasee High School football standouts, Zac McKee and Lucas Garza, both chose to sign on with Trine University to continue their football careers. Garza is also looking to play baseball at Trine as well.
Zac McKee had a standout season, serving as team captain for the Warriors while playing both sides of the ball as linebacker and running back. McKee was named the Warrior Way Award winner his senior season on the gridiron, and also earned the honor as a wrestler as a senior and as a sophomore.
McKee was also tabbed as Most Improved as a wrestler this past season and was named Wawasee’s Male Athlete of the Year this spring.
Among the laundry list of accomplishments for McKee at Wawasee include Leadership Committee, National Honor Society, Student Council representative, Nutritional Committee, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a member of the North Webster Church of God Youth Group.
McKee, who plans to study mechanical engineering at Trine, carries a 10.80 GPA (on a 12 scale) and is ranked 25th in his senior class.
On his choice of Trine, McKee offered, “It feels like home. It’s a Trine thing.”
Garza will serve double duty at Trine, kicking for the football team in the fall and hitting and pitching for the baseball team in the spring. Garza was a kicker for the Warriors this past season on the gridiron as well as a soccer standout. He is currently one of the stars of the Wawasee baseball team.
In football, Garza earned the Special Teams Player of the Year award this past fall, and is currently a baseball team captain. As a sophomore, Garza was awarded the JV Player of the Year award.
Garza is looking to study sports management at Trine, and currently holds a 10.90 GPA and ranks 18th in his class.
On choosing Trine, Garza notes, “I chose Trine primarily due to my major/business program and their athletic facilities. I liked the warm welcome my family and I received that made it feel safe, and I liked that it was close to home. I also liked the size of the campus, and it also allowed me to continue to play baseball and football at the collegiate level.”
