Whitko Sports Wrap: May 16
Baseball
The Whitko baseball team picked up a huge win Monday evening. The Wildcats handed Peru its first conference loss of the season with a 2-1 win in extra innings.
Tanner Gaff pitched all eight innings for the Wildcats to earn the win and also had the honor of scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Gaff scored on a fielder’s choice to give his team the win.
Zach Hewitt scored on an error earlier in the game to give Whitko its first run of the evening. The home team had a total of three hits for the game.
Whitko now stands at 6-2 in the TRC and 18-5 overall while Peru falls to 7-1 in conference play. Whitko, which is tied for second place in the conference with Tippecanoe Valley and Southwood, will play at Blackhawk Tuesday evening.
Softball
Whitko’s softball team earned an 8-4 victory over Peru Monday night.
The Wildcats used nine hits to help score eight runs in the win. Tori Silveus and Andrea Snavely spent time in the circle for Whitko. Anna Ousley, Reannon Hopkins and Riley Insley all had extra base hits for the home team.
Whitko will return home to face North Miami Wednesday for senior night.
Tennis
The Whitko tennis team picked up a win to wrap up its regular season.
Whitko beat Peru 4-1 with wins from Delaney Kerin (No. 2 singles) and Jackie Werstler (No. 3 singles) on the singles courts and a sweep on the doubles courts. Natalie Iholtz and Jenna VanCuren won at No. 1 doubles while Lauren Walpole and Brooke Prater won at No. 2 doubles.
Whitko will compete against Warsaw in a semifinal match of the Warsaw Sectional Thursday night at 4:30 p.m.
