Bremen Knocks Around Trojan Softball

Different conferences, same result for the two backyard softball rivals Thursday night. Bremen has had its way with Triton in recent matchups, continuing to have its way in an 11-1 win in Bremen.

Chelsea Huppert had herself a night, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and collecting her 12th pitching win of the season, scattering three hits and striking out a pair.

Shelby Zellmer homered and drove in four and Shannon Arndt chipped in a hit, two runs and two driven in for the Lions, which are 14-4 overall and 7-2 in the Northern Indiana Conference.

Courtney Jennings had a double for Triton (5-6), and worked all five innings in the circle, giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

Triton will jump back into Hoosier North Athletic Conference play Friday at Winamac.

Trojan Tennis Suffers First Setback

Across the street from the softball diamond, Triton and Bremen were renewing tennis acquaintances. Bremen would hand three Triton courts their first dual losses of the season in a 3-2 final.

Kylie Phillips and Liz Lawmaster each posted wins for Bremen in singles play, Phillips taking down Shayla May 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and Lawmaster a 6-3, 7-5 thriller against Kolbie Mason at No. 2.

Bremen’s clincher came at No. 2 doubles, where the team of Maggie Whitinger and Katherine Arevalo held off Megan McFarland and Tatum Thompson 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 dagger.

Triton’s Quinn Downing was able to beat Tayler Steigmeyer 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and the duo of Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross beat Shae Atkins and Lacey Bennet 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, the Triton duo still undefeated this season.

Triton and Bremen split the six JV matches three apiece.

Triton sits at 10-1 on the season with its next match set for Monday at South Bend Riley.

DeGroot Shuts Down Triton Baseball

Jack DeGroot was fantastic Thursday afternoon for Winamac, firing a one-hitter in the Warriors’ 8-1 win over Triton baseball.

DeGroot walked two and struck out 13, only allowing Max Slusser to come around and score after Winamac had already built an 8-0 lead. DeGroot added a hit and two RBIs at the plate as Winamac had 14 hits overall, all served up by Dylan Hensley of the Trojans.

Maverick Schultz was 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Winamac.

Triton falls to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in the HNAC. The two teams will get together at Ken Keller Field Friday afternoon for the second game of the back-to-back conference matchups.
