Tigers Finally Off The Schneid

Warsaw not only ended a six-game overall losing streak to start its softball season, but picked up a Northern Lakes Conference win in beating Goshen, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at home.

Sarah Shoemaker scored the final run for Warsaw in the fifth, and the Tigers held off a late Goshen rally. Lauren Shaffner ripped a two-out, two-run double to score Shoemaker and Heather Cox, who was pinch running for Liv Timmerman, who led off the fifth with a walk. Shoemaker also walked in the inning, and scored the game’s first run after singling and scoring in the first on a Grace Johnson sacrifice fly.

Shaffner also doubled in the fourth and scored on a Saylor Bradley triple.

Courtney Chookie pitched her best game of the season, giving up just four hits and striking out 10. Chookie got into, and then out of, trouble in the sixth. An RBI double from Gracie Hayes followed by an RBI groundout from Alexia Nettrouer cut Warsaw’s lead to 4-3. But a strikeout got Chookie out of the inning, and despite runners reaching first and second in the seventh for Goshen with one out, Chookie got a strikeout and a ground out to seal it.

Warsaw moves to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the NLC while Goshen settles at 4-5 and 1-1.

Warsaw will host Plymouth Friday.

RedHawks Edge Tiger Baseball

Goshen held on Wednesday for a 7-6 baseball win against visiting Warsaw.

Warsaw slugged 10 hits, including two each from Zach Witt, Marselo Rodriguez, Braxton Tennant and Blake Foreman. Goshen punched seven hits, and handed Foreman the loss on the hill.

The Goshen JV also beat Warsaw, 5-3. Derrick Backus had two hits for the Tigers.

Warsaw (3-3, 1-1 NLC) will play Thursday at Elkhart Central.
