Cubs Match Hits, Not Runs In Lopsided Loss
SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs collected 12 hits, but only had one run to show for its work in a 12-1 loss to Bowling Green Tuesday night at Four Winds Field. The Cubs left 14 men on base in the game. Bowling Green smacked 13 hits on the evening.
“A game like that is a tough one,” South Bend manager Jimmy Gonzalez said. “Guys were swinging the bats well, just not in the crucial times.”
Bowling Green pulled away early, taking a 4-0 lead after three innings, then scoring six more runs in the fifth.
Manny Sanchez led the way for the Hot Rods with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. Angel Moreno added two RBIs and a pair of runs, and Jake Cronenworth added a pair of hits and walk.
PJ Higgins scored South Bend’s only run on an RBI single from Eddy Martinez in the seventh. Daniel Spingola and Andrew Ely each had three hits for the Cubs.
Prior to the game, fans were able to meet Hall of Famer and former Chicago Cubs legend Fergie Jenkins during a meet and greet session. South Bend will welcome in another Cubs legend, Gary Matthews, in June.
The Cubs (6-6) and Hot Rods (6-7) meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
