FORT WAYNE – Although the TinCaps overcame a three-run deficit, the South Bend Cubs scored two late runs to win 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.

Austin Allen smacked a pinch-hit two-run single to cap a four-run seventh inning, helping the TinCaps (7-4) recover from an early 3-0 deficit. Kodie Tidwell had an RBI single, and Michael Gettys scored on a Scott Effross throwing error following Rod Boykin’s infield single.

However, Eloy Jimenez and Matt Rose each drove in a runner for the Cubs (5-5) to retake the lead during the top of the eighth.

Fort Wayne threatened in its final opportunity, getting Tidwell and Allen on the corners with two outs before Peter Van Gansen struck out on a full-count pitch.

TinCaps starter Walter Lockett threw six strong innings, but consecutive errors during the fourth frame led to three unearned runs. Elliot Ashbeck (L, 1-1) took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs over three innings pitched.

Effross (W, 1-0) grabbed the victory in 1.2 innings of relief. Craig Brooks (S, 1) survived the ninth inning to end Fort Wayne’s four-game winning streak and blemish a 5-0 record at Parkview Field.

The TinCaps went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base.

Fort Wayne heads out on the road with a Monday night meeting with Lansing, a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. South Bend starts a seven-game homestand Monday against Bowling Green with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
