FORT WAYNE – A red-hot Fort Wayne TinCaps order unloaded once again on the South Bend Cubs Saturday, April 16 at Parkview Field.
After 10-2 and 10-3 wins in the first two games of the series Thursday and Friday, Fort Wayne topped South Bend 14-1 in Midwest League baseball before 6,010.
Once again, the TinCaps enjoyed multi-run innings. The hosts cut loose for five in both the fifth and seventh frames and three in the second.
Second baseman and lead-off hitter Sutton Whiting (2-of-5) collected half of the Cubs’ hits and right fielder Daniel Spingola scored the visitors’ lone run.
South Bend (4-5) avoided a shutout with Spingola crossing the plate in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by Jose Paniagua.
The Cubs dropped their third straight game while going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.
Fort Wayne (7-3) was 7-of-20 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners while winning for the fourth straight time.
Pacing Fort Wayne’s 14-hit attack was shortstop Ruddy Giron (2-of-5 with one run and three RBI), third baseman Ty France (1-of-3 with one run and two RBI), right fielder Luis Tejada (3-of-3 with three runs and one RBI), left fielder Rod Boykin (3-of-4 with three runs and one RBI), catcher Austin Allen (2-of-4 with one run and one RBI), first baseman Brad Zunica (1-of-4 with two runs) and second baseman Peter Van Gansen (0-of-3 with two RBI).
The TinCaps are hitting .301 as a team while the Cubs are at .252.
Fort Wayne used three right-handers on the mound Saturday.
Enyel De Los Santos (4 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks) started.
Nick Monroe (3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk) worked the middle of the game and earned the victory, moving to 1-0.
Louis Distasio (2 innings, 1 hit, 1 runs, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks) finished up.
South Bend left-hander Kyle Twomey (4 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks) started and took the loss, falling to 0-1.
Other Cubs hurlers were right-handers James Norwood (2 innings, 2 hits, 3 runs, 3 strikeouts, 3 walks), Scott Frazier (1 inning, 4 hits, 5 runs, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks) and Greyfer Eregua (1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 strikeouts, 0 walks).
