LAKE COUNTY, FLA. — An injured bear cub is on the mend after firefighters rescued him Thursday from a Florida brush fire.
Lake County firefighters nicknamed the little guy Smokey Jr. after pulling him to safety from a 220-acre brush fire that endangered homes.
As firefighters cut fire lines in one area, flames kept popping up elsewhere, leaving behind a trail of ash.
Crews were able to save at-risk homes that were surrounded by flames.
Firefighters say there was no sign of Smokey Jr.’s mom.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are evaluating the cub.
