NCCAA Day Two: Grace Ousted By Emmanuel
WINONA LAKE – Day two is in the books at the NCCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball National Championships. Here’s a breakdown of the men’s and women’s brackets as action unfolded in the consolation and championship brackets.
Men’s Games:
Ohio Christian 98, Bluefield 81
Ohio Christian (23-10) had six players in double figures, led by Conor Maybry’s 20 points. Marquis Jackson added 18 points and nine boards. For Bluefield (21-14), Zeke Williams netted 20 points and Alonzo Howard had 13 points.
Central Christian 84, Alicy Lloyd 80
Sam Clayborn led Central (20-14) with 22 points while Lloyd (18-15) had Tyler Rogers and Cody Stumbo each score 19 points.
Southwest Christian 77, Trinity International 72
The two-seed Southwest Christian had a pair of big games from Gabi Laurent (25 points, 12 boards) and Marvin White (21 points) to reach the championship game. Trinity (20-13) fell short despite 18 points from Thomas Amrine and 15 points from Luke Read.
Emmanuel 83, Grace 61
The Lancers (20-14) couldn’t pull off the upset of the top seed in the tournament. Erik Bowen had 20 points and seven rebounds and Chad Hoffer notched 11 points for Grace, but missed the scoring of its guards. Brandon Vanderhegghen, who scored 25 points Wednesday night in a win against Alice Lloyd, was held to just seven points and Logan Irwin finished with just six points. The two combined to shoot a dismal 5-30 from the floor. Emmanuel (26-5) was well-rounded in its march to the championship game, using Kendrick Colvin’s 16 points along with 14 points from Steven Guinehard, 13 points from Zach Lillie and 12 points from Elijah Robinson. While the Lancers have won an NAIA National Championship (1992) the program has never won an NCCAA Tournament title.
Women’s Games:
Emmanuel 74, Bethesda 73
Emmanuel (20-12) needed every bit of contribution, and had five players score in double digits, led by the 17 points and 13 rebounds from Elise Coberly. Timia Reynolds had 15 points and the trio of Mikayla Trombley, Addie McNeely and Avery Scarbrough each finished with 10 points. Bethesda (14-14) had Athenea Jones net 17 points in the loss.
Bluefield 51, Point 43
Monique Robson led the way for Bluefield (21-12) with 14 points and Shelby Kay added 12 points. Point (23-11) had Candace Rhodes finish with 18 points.
