IHSAA SportsHow sweet it is.

That’s the case for a six-pack of area boys basketball teams, headlined by Warsaw, who have reached the Sweet Sixteen or the regional round of their respective class after claiming sectional championships Saturday night.

The Tigers, who are ranked No. 5 in Class 4-A, are headed to the Michigan City Regional come Saturday. Warsaw, sporting a 23-1 record, will tangle with South Bend Riley (22-5) in the first semifinal.

The Tigers, who beat host Elkhart Central 38-35 on a Kyle Mangas three-point play with 1.6 seconds to play in the sectional final, posted six regular-season wins over teams who won sectional championships. The impressive list included Homestead and Carroll in Class 4-A, Mishawaka Marian, Columbia City and NorthWood in Class 3-A and Triton in Class 1-A. Carmel, the lone team to defeat the Tigers, also won a sectional title.

Triton, fresh off a sectional title on its home floor in Bourbon, will be right back in its own friendly confines as a Class 1-A regional host. The Trojans, who are 18-7, meet up with Gary 21st Century (18-6).

NorthWood, the No. 1 team in Class 3-A, heads to the Marion Regional. The Panthers, who won their own sectional title, face Angola. NorthWood sits at 23-2, while the Hornets are 25-2.

Mishawaka Marian will square off versus Twin Lakes in the Class 3-A Kankakee Valley Regional. Columbia City will play host Marion in the Class 3-A Marion Regional. Westview will face Fort Wayne Canterbury in the Class 2-A North Judson Regional.

Regional champions move on to semistate action on Saturday, March 19. The IHSAA will make semistate assignments as far as who will play where on Sunday, March 13.
